Assembly hold emergency special session on Ukraine.
Ukraine has shown the world who they are...
That they are awake, aware, historically well informed, courageous, family
oriented, and freedom loving... Russia has shown what it has become... Or their
leadership and oligarchy that is, (because apparently many of their ordinary
citizens are just like the Ukrainians too) ...
We can't go there yet
because of what's happening now, but here is one thing to marvel at Ukraine
for, beautiful Saint Sophia Cathedral..
(From WHE:
This article on Saint Sophia
Cathedral, Kyiv was written by our Ukrainian contributor, Artem Vynohradov.
Thankfully, we have heard from him, and he's currently safe in the Metro in
Kyiv.
Our thoughts go out to
everyone in Ukraine, all Russians who are against this war and everybody around
the world who has been affected by conflict.)
Probably because of
all those blogging sites, I too am starting to get confused with the term

Our Monday
reminders...
No time to mourn...
Ezekiel was a living illustration... Though he obeyed God's command to prophecy
and preach, yet when his wife died, he continued his task without giving time
in mourning... The prophet is telling us in quite graphic words, that lust,
much like idolatry, do not pay: they ruin families and relationships,
communities and nations; so much so that in all the tragedy and sorrow that
follow, those who fall victim to it would be more consumed with mindless
survival, rather than a proper time to mourn and give proper closure... May we
learn to conduct our affairs with integrity and wisdom, so that the people we
care about will not suffer in the consequences of our choices and wrong
judgments...
Time spent with family
is always time well spent... And family are not only those we are related by
blood with or are married into, but the people we have welcomed into our hearts...
May we be blessed with health, safety and prosperity along with our families
today and every day...

more than illusions uninformed by current and recent events and geopolitical
changes, but only based on hallucinations and misinterpretations lifted from
history books, last copyrighted in 1945?...

The prophet is telling
us that all the misery that God's ancient people have experienced is because
God punished them for their sins... To our modern eyes and cultures however, we
know and history has proven, that those who do wicked and cruel things to
others, will end up being haunted and destroyed by it... Because murder is
still murder, stealing is still stealing, adultery is still adultery, greed and
envy and covetousness are still covetousness; therefore, land and territory
grabbing, human trafficking and sacrifice, fraud and swindling and usury will
always be crimes, no matter what a person's race or religion will be... But
like dross that God promises He will gather and still melt and mint like
silver, if we repent and amend our ways and go back to Him, He can gather even
the most useless things in our lives, and transform us for good and for His
glory...
While there will
always be evil and wicked people who will bring about untold misery and grief,
we thank God our Creator has made us innately strong and resilient... Because
though our bodies may be physically hurt, our minds and hearts shaken by terror
and anxiety, yet, the deepest recesses of our being are equipped to keep us
alive until our appointed times, to keep on hoping, to remain steadfast and
fighting strong...

Someone boldly claimed
that many of us are ignorant of history, because Russia had the right to invade
Ukraine, because Ukraine is part of Russia... My question is how can a
self-governing democratic country be part of a socialist federation of
republics, when it has its own popularly elected leader, against one whose
leader was initially appointed, but then, later on, appointed himself as leader
for life?...
Beats me...
This pandemic era has
shown us all the more strongly why we should care about what is happening in
the farthest reaches of the globe... Because someday, in a better future, we
will eventually have no more race, but as God's creation, we are one family, we
are GLOBAL CITIZENS...
Amidst all the
emotions, we may be forgetting that many Russian people are protesting their

The reason why the
Second Coming has not yet happened, is like God's ancient people, we who claim
to believe in and worship Him now, are His examples to the world--His light,

understanding, peace and love, free from all idolatry and wickedness and
cruelty, devoid of greed and envy and selfishness, building bridges and
upholding truth and life, instead of fanning the flames of war by spreading
lies and anger... May we dutifully fulfill our as yet, unrealized, mostly

MY MARTIAL LAW
MEMORIES
When Marcos proclaimed
Martial Law in 1972, I was still in the elementary years. I heard it from the
radio in our far-away barrio. My father who was an elementary school teacher
explained it to me but my young mind could not fully understand what it meant.
He also explained the ongoing Vietnam war which made things more complicated.
What I remembered then
was that we need to line up in town to get some supply of yellow corn. Corn is
the staple food in Cebu but it was "white" corn grits which we
brought. This time we could only buy "yellow" and in small amount.
Some people say this corn are the ones used to feed the horses, not humans. We
are a big family; that supply hardly lasts for a week. The next week I join my
father again queueing up like beggars in the poblacion to get those yellow food
for "horses". At one point, the supply were not enough for us all.
Regardless of what
they say about Imelda's Green Revolution project, for us, it was an epic
failure. We had no food on our tables even if my father had some meager
capacity to buy. If you think that Martial Law is the "golden years",
yes it was, because we had "golden corn".
I went to join and
listen to vocation talks while in high school. I was still very young but I can
already feel the stirrings of vocation in my heart.
There was a
Redemptorist priest who went around the small towns of Cebu to recruit for
vocations. His name is Fr. Rody Romano CSsR. He was a different kind of priest.
He talked to us under the trees in our school not inside classrooms. My young
inquisitive mind was really captivated by his story. He said that he was once
assigned in the mountains of Mindanao. He had a horse which he used in
traversing those hilly communities of the poor. Instead of a gun—which some
priests brought with them in those violent times in Mindanao to protect
themselves—he had only the crucifix in his pocket or on the belt of his cassock.
The priest mounted on
a horse caught my imagination. I wanted to be assigned in those mountains at
the peripheries, and bring the cross to the poor. One of its perks is to have a
horse. Well, until today, I still do not have a horse, hahaha.
To make the long story
short, I joined the Vincentians not the Redemptorists. But when I was in the
seminary, I heard that Fr. Rudy Romano disappeared and until today the
Redemptorists do not know what happened to him. He was very critical of Marcos
and his regime. During my ordination, I would have wanted to invite him because
the image of a priest on mission to the peripheries still burns in my heart.
Wherever I have been assigned in the past 33 years of my priesthood, it is
still the driving metaphor in my ministry. But Fr. Rudy could no longer to be
found. He is one of the martyrs of Martial Law.
He was not alone.
There were many others and their families can tell us their stories of pain and
suffering. If you think Martial Law is the golden years of the Philippine
history, listen to the victims and their ordeals. Many of them are still alive.
Ask them to tell their stories.
In those times when
all media was controlled by Marcos, we were scavenging for news in
“mimeographed” sheets, hungry for alternative news from the underground. We
pass them around, xeroxed them for all. We were critical of the stories that
came from Malacanang. We wanted to know beyond what was forced into our throats
by the Marcos media.
Do not believe the
trolls today. It is the same propaganda all over. These digitally invented
messages aim to destroy history and drown the voices of the victims.
Fast forward to August
21, 1983. It was a Sunday. As young Vincentian novices then, we were spending
the whole day of Sunday in the apostolate at the communities in the mountains
of Angono, Rizal — with a group of subsistence farmers near the famous
prehistoric petroglyphs in one of its caves.
When we went home that
late afternoon, what met us was the news of Ninoy’s assassination on the
tarmac. There was the drama of Galman and all the commotion with it on our TV
screen. The news was not clear then—the unknown assassin did it, the communists
planned it, etc. But the news was very disturbing.
We were Martial Law
babies. We heard of the First Quarter Storm. We heard of the church repression
and of church leaders that went missing. We heard of farmers and political
prisoners who disappeared. But this was a bit far from our young minds. Even
Ninoy’s death. No one among us knew Ninoy at close range. We sang “Tie a yellow
ribbon” then, but that was all about it.
Yet a moral chord was
hit within our young minds that night. Something was definitely wrong. There
was something not in order. Something happened that was certainly evil.
On the rooftop of our Angono
seminary that overlooked Laguna de Bay and the Pasig, our young minds—lured by
the McGyver imagination of our generation (millennials do not anymore know of
McGyver, hahaha)—were trying to figure out how to launch an attack at the
Palace through a guided missile by the Pasig River.
Of course, it was born
out of our frustration that we were stuck on top of this mountain, and could
not do anything at all, like the rest of “imprisoned novices” of our time.
But there was
something that we did that Sunday night which I will never forget. I do not
know if my classmates still remembered. We had this old Spanish Vincentian
priest who was our novice master. He was very conservative, politically and
theologically. We asked him a question which only young innocent minds can ever
ask:
“Can we pray for the
death of the dictator?” We were thinking: if he has wrecked havoc to thousands
and millions, would it not do the country good if he goes? Is it even moral to
think so?
To our surprise, he
said: “Yes, you can.” We did not expect an old conservative Spanish priest
would agree with us. From then on, we always included that in our evening
prayer intentions.
God did not listen to
our prayers. At least, not that soon.
But that sincere
prayer enlarged our young hearts toward a sense of justice and fairness – that
things could not go on this way, that the dignity of peoples should be defended
at whatever cost, that our lives could not just go on as usual while the people
around us are dying — all of them waiting for justice and our human action.
That one day, God will
come and render us justice. For God listens to the cry of the poor, as the
psalmists keep repeating to us.
It took three years
after that, when this same group of young novices—now in our last years of
theological training—took to the streets to join the many others who have
awaken up in the EDSA revolution that Ninoy started to inspire in our hearts
three years earlier.
I really hope that we
do not need three years to do it again. The same evil forces are back. The
son—Marcos Jr—proclaims himself as the successor to bring back the old
horrendous and violent glory. The daughter of Duterte is a new cohort. And the
old oligarchs and plunderers join in the party called the Uniteam. All these
opportunists need to answer to the people.
Things cannot remain
this way. They cannot come back to power. We cannot survive to experience
impunity and plunder twice or thrice over.
TAMA NA. SOBRA NA.
LABAN NA. That was our call then. It is the same call today.
P.S. I invite my
friends who had experiences of Martial Law to share their stories. Our young
people value personal witness. They are waiting for us to narrate what we went
through. For all you know, not all of them are enamored with TikTok. They
reading and are listening. We need to counter Marcos-Duterte historical
revisionism. It is destroying us.

A house of lies is a
house of cards, that may flourish for a time and increase in number, but will
easily crumble upon slight testing, or even just a small question on a whiff of
solid and true conviction or doctrine, or a lack thereof... And no matter how
much we try to convince and indoctrinate others, yet, if our personal lives and
motivations, our characters are questionable, we can no more save others than
ourselves... For even outstanding men like Noah, Daniel and Job, can only save
themselves and not others more despite their testimonies... May we live in humility
and transparency, that others may be blessed, and be inspired by our words and
lives too...
Dubious... Spoken, the
word seems almost cute; yet, actually it is not; for it means something
doubtful, questionable, even fake and a lie... Unfortunately, many people who
should have known better, fall for such claims, even on matters of health and
safety... May we have wisdom not to fall for those, and like faith and
conviction, live our days with beliefs and principles not based on hearsay, but
on actual experiences, with lessons formed and imprinted on our hearts and
minds in love, truth and right knowledge, and godly discernment...

nor learn the lesson, even if these can be plainly seen right in front of them.
But there is hope, salvation and deliverance for one who humbles one's self,
listen and learn from the rebuke and discipline, and does what is just and
right, in obedience, thankfulness and faith...
Not all battles need
to be fought in the moment. For some, one has to take up the cause of, while
others must need to be let go, for they might not be on one's level or
available resources. Because the key to sanity and survival is knowing when to
play the hero, and in knowing when to save one's energy and abilities to live
to fight another battle, another day...

It's Monday, a good

Empathy is a saving
grace; and a few who truly understand and care enough, can bring about salvation,
hope and deliverance... For our God directs His hosts, to ever be watchful on
those with the heart to obey, and the faith and conviction to live in humility
and service, in love and concern, in justice and fairness...
To have a truly happy
and fulfilling life, one must ever be mindful of when one has had enough, and
to move on to new and better things, to get to know new and different kinds of
people, and to learn new and greater ideas... For life consists not in having
too much of anything, nor to climb the highest one can get--be it material
wealth, career or social status... But a truly rich and meaningful life, is one
made beautiful by variety, and a grateful appreciation and acknowledgment of
the uniqueness and greatness of each of its individual moments...

The Word today
Today's lesson
It is what we do in
secret, in the dark, that shows who we are... And that includes idolatry,
jealousy and envy, rumor-mongering, pride and vanity, malice and cruelty, evil
intent and wickedness, greed and misplaced faith... May we not offend our
Creator anymore, worship and ascribe glory to Him instead of created things,
and live the rest of our days in humility and love, and in obedience to His
Word and will in our lives...
Falsely accusing
someone is one of the greatest injustices of humankind... Sadly, it has been
done, and is still being committed, by many who claim their faith to be called
by the name of our Lord and Savior... But may we be different; and may we learn
to live in honesty and truth, in justice and fairness, in hope and joy, in
faith and love...

We're still feeling
the Valentine’s Day spirit, so we’re thinking about the ways we show love. That
includes how we care for our elderly grandparents, relatives, and neighbors. So we asked our faculty for some
tips and ways you can brighten their days—and make yourself useful.
The object of our
pride, oppression and gloating over others, is often the cause of our
humiliation and downfall... May we have the wisdom and humility to learn when
we have been rebuked and disciplined, and to spend the rest of our days in
obedience to our Maker, and in truth, justice and kindness to one and all...
Let us make no
mistake... All the work that we do, however complicated or simple, is our
humble participation in the great and eternal creative work of the One who gave
us life, and the means to keep it and make it work and worthwhile... And while
we have to give our best in every moment, especially in how we earn our keep,
and to keep alive and well our connections with everyone around, may we also
have wisdom and courage to protect life--ours and all, and to always uphold
truth, justice, hope, faith and love...
In short: it is not a
death sentence, it is not contagious, it is not caused by cellphones or power
lines or artificial sweeteners, surgery cannot make it spread, it cannot be
cured by herbal medicines or metallic treatments, it does not run in families,
it does not need to come back, and it can be cured forever (if we but fight
well, and be less greedy and selfish)... It is rather how you live, and you
think and feel...

lives--physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually; with our duty to keep
ourselves and our fellowman from greed and wickedness, upholding truth and hope
instead of propagating lies and sowing fear... May we be found faithful to such
a call... #Ezekiel3and4
Some people these days
seem out of touch with the prevailing mood and culture, ignorant of current
events, with their thoughts and motivations clearly manifested in words,
actions, initiatives and programs that are far removed from the realities on
the ground, even within their own communities. Sadly, they believe they are
special and possessing a higher level of knowledge and wisdom. Unfortunately,
they don't, because the traits they are exhibiting are symptoms of
schizophrenia. May we keep our heads always; and may God always give us sound

If we realize that our
God is King, worthy of worship and obedience, simply because there is nothing
He cannot do, there is no judgement and favor He is not entitled to give, and
there is nowhere His power and glory are not revealed and manifested,

there is no room for rebellion, nor disrespect of Him and others, nor pride and
greed, and never one for abuse, neglect, oppression, ignorance and apathy...
Breakthrough moments
are often the result of many previous actions, which build up the potential
required to unleash a major change.

True to the Word...
The mark of the great prophets like Jeremiah is that what they said will happen
really came true, sometimes at one time, sometimes in waves, and often
repeating across history and civilizations; unlike so-called seers and doomsday
prophets, who merely rehash old tales, and embellish them with
attention-catching words which they feel would get unwitting believers and
adherents in each generation... So is it in our ordinary lives too: the true
measure of a person is our ability to fulfill our promises, and be true to our
words... May we have humility and wisdom, discernment and good judgment. For
though we may not know the future, but we can trust that our God has
everything--our history, and our ultimate destiny--in His hands...
Love is not something
we say, we do, we sell or market; nor is it a deadline, a measurement, a
bargaining deal or negotiation. It is who our Creator is, our God, King and
Savior. It is who we are, who are made in His image, and who must live the rest
of our days living its essence to all people, regardless of age, gender,
nationality, situation and magnitude...

The Word today
Today's lesson
Celebrating God's love
and love for one another in church...
#MayForeverTwogetherAndOneGether
This may be one of the
longest and direst prophecies in the Word, which if truly was written yet
thrown in the Euphrates, would have no existing record other than in here; but
it teaches us one great lesson about God's judgment on the ancient kingdom and
empire of Babylon, and everything that it stands for. It's tyranny, oppression
and authoritarianism, it's idolatry, abuse and wanton ways, it's thievery,
land-grabbing and invasions, have endured in many of today's civilizations and
nations. But God is still the same. As much as He hated Babylon's evil ways
before, destroyed her, made her a desolation, and set her captives free, so
there will be a time of deliverance from all the greed, abuses, oppressions,
slavery, idolatry, thievery and invasions, lies and pride humanity and creation
are being subjected to now, with such rotten systems and administrations be
buried under the deepest parts of the rising oceans. May we learn the lesson,
heed the call, and dedicate our days to upholding righteousness and mercy,
justice and freedom, humility before our God and Creator, and hope and faith in
His words and promises...
Nothing beats genuine; so that no
matter how people try to pretend, they will always be found out, and be held

Let's just mind each other's business, and celebrate love everyday; because on
this yearly anniversary of the murder of the Saints and Priests Valentine, and
the massacre of many of his adherents, all of us have the right to live as what
our God--who is love Himself--designed: in love, in truth, unburdened, and at
peace...

“Social-media
platforms have played a large role in spreading misinformation and
disinformation about vaccines, reaching an increasingly large audience with
repeated false claims,” International Vaccine Access Center at JHSPH director
Bill Moss said.
“This in large part
accounts for differences in parental views of vaccines from the
nineteen-nineties until now. But this is also occurring in a broader cultural
context in which there is increasing mistrust in traditional scientific,
medical, and public-health expertise.”
Holding out on one's
pride and stubbornness, and insisting on one's own way; for a desire to stand
out, to be considered unique, to be treated special and privileged, and to be
seen as one possessing a higher or deeper level of intelligence and knowledge,
is actually the greater fool...
Some things must not
be overdone, like care and affection, or a desire to have things go our way;
otherwise, we may run out on some things too, like patience and understanding,
energy and time, and chances and opportunities to do good and to make life
better for us and the people around...
Sometimes I hear some
people criticize something or someone, and it seems like they know a lot, that
they are really knowledgeable, and that their tastes and preferences are really
high standard, world-class, sophisticated and refined... But I personally
believe what the Desiderata poem says that, "even the dull and ignorant
have their story"... True, what we read, see and hear may be too mundane,
commonplace, cliche, or highly fantastical, but still, every story is worth
listening to; because all stories are based on simple and basic truths--about
life and people... And whether it be a form of escapism, but values, customs,
norms and principles that other people show us as anecdotes or reportage, are
never useless; because they show us how the world works, and how the rest of
humanity live and think and feel... May we have eyes to see, ears to hear, and
hearts to humbly learn and grow...
Taking control of our
minds...
"Conspiracy
theories are for losers,” says Joseph Uscinski, associate professor of
political science at the University of Miami and co-author of the 2014 book
American Conspiracy Theories. Uscinski stresses that he uses the term
literally, not pejoratively. “People who have lost an election, money or
influence look for something to explain that loss.”...
“A small part in
motivating the endorsement of…irrational beliefs,” the researchers wrote, “is
the desire to stick out from the crowd.”...
"Ultimately, the
human mind is a free and often irrational agent, and people will believe what
they want to believe. Believing the truth may not be as much fun as believing
the fables, but it makes for a better mind — and a better culture, too."

Many times, when we choose to go our
own way, instead of thriving where we are--as God's will would have us, and
regardless of His plan and purpose--sadness and misery follow... For always,
the grass is only greener from the other side of the fence; but those who
remain faithful and humble, obedient and hopeful, will be blessed regardless of
the place, age and circumstance...
Most of us want a better future, and
so, we do all we can to prepare for it, even laying down our best plans... But
much as we must be future - oriented, let us not forget to be present and in
the moment too...
I remember the Social Science Reader in the elementary

A worthy reminder...
Most often, it is those people we
trust and put our faith on, but are actually faithless, who will betray us,
like what tragically happened to Governor Gedaliah, who was made to govern the
remnants... But there are also those like Johanan, who step up to lead, and
gather the people to safety, and for recovery and rebuilding... May we learn
our lesson from this, to always ask God for wisdom, that we might be good
judges of character, so that however well-meaning may be our efforts, we do not
blindly trust and be complacent with the wrong people, especially those who
make empty promises, that our good plans and intentions may not be in vain...
Receiving something that one has not
properly earned - - whether such came through political connections, bribery,
deceit, bullying, abuse or oppression - - really does have its lifetime and
eternal consequences... It may not come as fast as a zombie movie Outbreak, but
surely, the deadness of the soul will slowly claw at the person's being, until
it festers, and grows gangrenous and worse with age... May we learn to live
rightly and honestly, be responsible and accountable, and be just and fair...
And, another new word...

And also, this...
"If the virus isn’t there, it’s
not directly [causing] the problem — that would be encephalitis — but the
viruses can cause systemic problems, like the inflammation that [can] affect
every organ system, including the brain — its an indirect effect.”
“Chronic inflammation has many
causes, including diabetes, obesity, and nutrition. These are a predisposition
to autoimmune disorders, and they cause and accelerate the risk of
brain-related disorders.”
Please, let us all stay safe and
healthy always...
"However, a positive test for
COVID-19 is not necessary
Trusted Source for the diagnosis of

serve as a barrier for people who had the virus early on in the pandemic."

It's Monday, and time again for our
necessary reminders...
Sometimes, help and support come not
from people one thinks of and depend on for influence and power, but even from
strangers, the powerless and the underprivileged, who go out of their way and
beyond their capacity, to be humane and to try to live a godly and honest
life... Because as always, obedience to the command of loving our neighbor and
the rest of humanity, for the greater good, will always be the key to the
healing and deliverance of all...
Sometimes, we dream of old friends
and loved ones who are long gone... If they are still alive, we can pray that
they are doing fine and well; if not anymore, we pray that the lessons we have
learned from their lives be not wasted, and that we would all become better for
it...

The Word today
Today's lesson
No matter how much we strive to deny
and reject them, and struggle to hold on to beliefs and traditions passed down
to us, and entrenched in our systems, even though they defy the natural logic
our Creator has instilled in creation: the Truth, His Word, His will and
purpose, will never fail... And we have to accept that His will may mean that
at times we go through trials and difficulties, abuses and oppressions, to the
point that we give our bodies and freedoms as living testimonies, in bringing
about the greater good for humanity; still, like the prophet Jeremiah, we can
be confident that He who made us fearfully and wonderfully, and who called us
from the womb, will always preserve our minds and souls, and never fail to pour
on us His Spirit...
If you’re holding out on getting vaccinated because you're
betting on the virus getting weaker with time, this isn't a safe bet. Getting
vaccinated is still the best thing you can do to protect yourself, your loved
ones and your community from severe COVID-19.
All of us are believers in
something, and in many things. Some of those beliefs may be set in stone. Yet,
especially in matters of life and death, the truly mature, wise and responsible
person may change a few, when confronted with reality, facts and reason...
On intermittent breaks from storing
water for the household, until the wee hours of midnight, and as per MCWD
advisory, here is a glaring reality from across the globe (or next door
country), about what it means to live in this pandemic; the last item
especially, is for those who may be too selfish or irresponsible enough not to
get vaccinated even if they are young and healthy, not to mask up and disinfect
properly, who cannot social distance well and respectfully, and who are too
proud, rude and stubborn, and un-courteous or do not practice good manners in
sneezing and coughing, even if they are around kids, the elderly and
immuno-compromised people...
#RealityHasNoRoomForLiesOrTheories
A decade ago, when it was an
"in" thing to talk to (with people putting the whole gadget on the
side of their faces, to better hear) or video call on electronic tablets, I
knew it was tech savvy and a status symbol... But I can't help but compare that
to speaking on an office accounting calculator, or tape register counting
machines, or an abacus... Thank God we have smart phones now, in all models and
price ranges... At least, talking to "electronic calculator-sized
gadgets" look better and seem more convenient... >
#AMoreCompactWorldWithAWiderReach
Viruses and bacteria have always
been there since the beginning of time... What most of us don't realize is that
our present predicament is caused by only one thing: a lack of proper manners
because we are too stubborn, too proud and full of ourselves to practice proper
and courteous coughing and sneezing habits; and therefore unworthy of trust,
and cannot be expected to display the same to others... And because people
don't change, well, the stubborn will persist, the conscientious will do their
best to survive, and we may not blame nor do we have the right to ask for help
and support from others if we get sick because we are rude and unhygienic...

Oppression and abuse always lead to
misery and destruction; while obedience and faithfulness are enduring legacies...
Apathy leads to the breakdown of
society... And so, any mature and responsible person must learn to put himself
or herself in other people's shoes, and must care, be concerned, and act
accordingly; in an inoffensive, well-meaning, considerate, and if possible,
unobtrusive manner... And we must raise our children and the next generation up
in these values too...

Just to express my condolences to
Madam Nellas and the family, and my eternal salute to a very dear teacher since
First Year High School, Prof. Danny Nellas, with this heart-warming anecdote...
You will be missed, Sir, and fondly
remembered too... Rest in peace...
THE THIRTY-FOUR YEAR OLD WOOD
LAMINATE,
OR, SERENITY, COURAGE, AND WISDOM
"I looked at Sir Nellas almost
like an indulgent uncle in first year... in our wood lamination project, after
he removed the plastic cellophane frame when the liquid laminate on my project
did not yet fully harden, I complained and said, "Wah! Sir, gitanggal
dayon nimo ang cellophane, nilukot nuon akong project, na-pangit na, unya imo
ko dayon hatagan ug gamay nga grade!"...
and he very calmly replied,
"Lagi, dili tika tagaan ug gamay nga grade."... and I got 1.5...
and after 34 years, that was my only
high school project that is still in display in our house in Leyte as of now,
even supertyphoon Haiyan was not able to damage or break my wood laminate with
the curled up but sandpapered sides...
it crossed islands, as both a
testament to my teacher's tenacity and indulgence, and my own
"kakulitan", my own little remembrance of a forever calm, cool and
chill, but smart and understanding teacher...
And that wood laminate contained a
picture of a beautiful sunset with these timeless words:
GOD, GRANT ME
THE SERENITY TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I
CANNOT CHANGE,
COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN,
AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE
DIFFERENCE."

You're probably wondering, when will
the pandemic just end-emic already? Well, we can draw some lessons from the

The truth is, increased levels of
