SLOW THINKING, MAY 1-31, 2026

"There is so much to feel exasperated of, so much to feel disgusted by, especially of those who should have known better, because they are of the status and of the position to make better judgements and act accordingly. But thankfully life is bigger, there are more reasons to celebrate, for a good and loving God made it so. Yes, many people are stupid and evil, but much more are honestly and diligently doing their jobs, and giving their best. For us to discover and appreciate the latter is the real treasure hunt. And all our efforts at discovering should inspire us to feel thankful rather than feel betrayed and broken; all our struggles to live ethically and worthily of our calling should never feel like a burden, but always an opportunity to rejoice."

"Our freedom should not be used to inflict pain, injustice or bondage upon others. Because true freedom also means setting others free from what binds them, or holds them back."

Just had to share this and air out, because my heart these past few days, because of friends and acquaintances who became fire victims, and because of a 'resentment' from some co-teachers...

When your students ask you, "will there still be classes after 5, when that’s the only thing that they have to go back to school for".. As in? you're telling that to a teacher nga CPA, Lawyer, ug CPA Lawyer? For subjects that are RFBT, or Tax, that are major ones not just in the CPALE but in your future working and personal lives? Don't you realize that these people are among the higher-paid professionals in society, and that they chose to teach (and prepare, and check and grade, and commute or drive to school amidst traffic and inconvenience, and strive to be heard and beg for attention during face-to-face or online classes) for a measly few hundred pesos per hour of physical/scheduled teaching unit; just because at heart, they are beyond their licenses; but are actually of the vocation, and have a burning conviction, to share what they have learned, what they have experienced, with the next generation of learners and aspiring professionals, in the hope that they might also help in bringing about a better future?"

My dear students, let's not be like this.

Let's just be thankful we have teachers who are willing to teach us, to challenge us, to discipline us, that we might not become future liabilities in society, but assets and good investments whose value will only appreciate over time, and whose skills will only sharpen with experience.

Let's not forget, sin and evil have many roots. The New Testament of the Holy Bible talks about one: the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10). The Old Testament in the Psalms and the Proverbs (Psalm 35:12; Proverbs 17:13) talk about the other: ungratefulness, leading to pride and sin.

May we be thankful, may we be humble, may we be teachable, always.

"Even if some people are given everything they want, they would still complain, they would still strive and struggle for more. Most often, they lack joy and appreciation of what life is already dishing out to them. But if we can stop and consider that everything in life works out well for those who love the Creator and the life He has given, then we can take our time, and wait patiently for things to come our way, and manifest into the good and the great that we have been wishing for. May we always be thankful and humble, may we always be mindful and sane, as we live each day in gratitude and hope."

"Just as there are those who are proud of themselves and their own righteousness, not realizing they have hardened their hearts towards God, so also are there people who feel they have monopoly of knowledge and have hardened their hearts towards truth, justice, freedom, fairness and democratic free will. Sadly, insisting on our own reason without acknowledging that people do change, and that the things we think are good and right may not always be so, is the first step towards wisdom, towards a life of peace and freedom and love. May the rest of our days be spent learning, growing, outgrowing our prejudices and misplaced loyalties, and be an endless pursuit and promotion of what is good and pure, what is holy and true."

"Even if people are greedy, selfish, entitled, rude and bad, it doesn't diminish the beauty of God and His creation."

"Just watched Mariana van Zeller's documentary on the plastic surgery industry a few days ago, where both legit and shadowy actors are at play, and where even she had herself filmed as she received her regular Botox injections. Not to be judgmental, but indeed, trying to preserve youth and beauty comes at a huge cost. That's why, nothing beats accepting age as it comes, in all its gray hairs, folds, wrinkles, accumulated fat, aching joints and all; and being thankful that God made us in His image and likeness-- in youth using our energy to learn wisdom and doing our best to follow His will; in advancing and old age, dispensing that wisdom as we pay forward and fulfill our duties as good examples and elders, in a world and for a generation vehemently denying but clearly increasingly in dire need of truth, love, wisdom, good behavior, and responsible teachers and shepherds."
