WISDOM CALLS July 17, 2020

Maybe because of the effects of the pandemic, every day we see many of our leaders and the people we look up to, becoming more and more incoherent.  One begins to question the logic of their ways, their decisions and actions, and wonders where have all their smarts gone off to, when even their pronouncements are becoming blatantly contradictory, and devoid of good judgment, which is even worse than what little children can do.

I guess this is what one publication calls, “pandemic fatigue”.  And fatigue, according to medical experts, does cause one to think incoherently, sometimes mumble words without thinking, coming up senseless and illogical.  I am reminded of a late professor and mentor who always questions us regarding our answers and actions, and comments: “wala’y wisdom! (no wisdom!)”.  Wisdom indeed is paramount in all that we say and do, and every choice that we make.

I believe that especially in these times, we need the wisdom that calls to us from the pages of the Word, particularly in the book of Proverbs chapter 9.  We learn that wisdom is attributed to in the feminine gender, probably because she is not forceful, yet she is deep, abundant, nurturing and generous.

We read that Wisdom prepares her house, her pillars, her offerings and gifts, her bread and wine, and has sent her maidens to invite one and all.  She says that with her, there is multiplication or increase of life, that a just person who accepts her will increase in learning, and even if disciplined, will still grow in wisdom and maturity.

She contrasts this with those who do not accept her correction and discipline, calling them scornful, wicked, and foolish.

She asks that people receive her into their lives so that they may be able to forsake the foolish life, live well, and go in the way of understanding.  She warns them from partaking of stolen waters or secret bread, those things that are illicit, illegal, immoral and frankly devoid of proper reason and understanding, because it will only lead to death and hell.

But verse 10 I believe, holds the key to attaining her, for it says: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the Holy [One] is understanding.”

Maybe what we all need now, from those occupying the highest positions in government, businesses, society and the family, down to the littlest child, is wisdom that is from GOD.  He is our Maker and He always has our best interest in mind.

We are at war with an unseen enemy, and as such every day, there are battles and skirmishes we must endure and fight.  This is not the time to lose our head, to lose our focus, to be overwhelmed and confused, to be incoherent and lose sense and sensibility.  We need to fight for our health, we need to fight for our lives, we need to continue to fight for our future.

One infectious disease doctor from abroad has declared that in this war, only the strong and those who take this seriously, will survive.  We need to pray really hard, reform our ways, be vigilant and conscientious, and stay strong and focused.  And when godly wisdom calls to guide us in the right path and enlighten our ways, we need to heed that call.
